Prof Bamidele Adebisi

Engineer

Bamidele Adibisi

In my research, I use communication and intelligent systems to manage energy, water and transport. I was going to study to be a doctor but I changed my mind because I realised I love ‘numbers’ more than I love ‘blood’! I studied Electrical Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Nigeria.

I then went on to study Mobile Communication and to get a PhD in communications systems at Lancaster University. PhD stands for ‘Doctor of Philosophy’, which no longer means you have to study Philosophy but rather study a field of your choice very deeply and thoroughly – it is the highest level of degree a student can achieve.

My PhD was interesting! It was on the use of electric wire to send and receive information. I used what I learned to develop better ways of managing and moving energy. Now I have lots of different projects with big organisations to try and use our planet’s resources more wisely and effectively.

I joined Manchester Metropolitan University in 2012 and currently lead a research team working to develop smarter, more energy efficient systems.

My hobby is having a long uninterrupted sleep!

Bamidele is our Super Strength box champion.

The most awesome thing I have done so far is...

I have two things! I am a chartered engineer (that basically means someone has given me a gold star for my building work!) and I won an Award in 2014 and 2016 (twice!). And back when I was a young boy, a good friend of mine dropped out of school because he had some issues, I convinced him to return to school and he graduated and now he has a really cool job!

My heroes are...

Isaac Newton, who is the scientist who discovered gravity!

Advice I would give my 7 year old self...

Think Big! Those dreams are achievable, if you don’t give up. But remember; you have to be awake to live your dreams.

At primary school my favourite thing to do was...

Building long trains from recycled tins (milk tins to be precise!)
