Haydn Francis

Battery scientist and mentor

Haydn Francis Curiosity Champion

I am a scientist, mentor and teacher who loves a bit of rock music! I studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, learning about mathematics, physics, material science and chemistry. I really enjoyed chemistry and decided to stay on and do a PhD in chemistry with a focus on making batteries work better and longer. I was part of the Faraday Insitution , you can see an interview I did a few years ago here:

I enjoy helping people so I decided to try teaching, and for the last 7 years I have taught physics, mathematics and chemistry to hundreds of international high school students all over the world. I now look after undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge.  In his free time, Haydn enjoys playing football and squash, watching classic movies and drumming in an indie rock band.

Haydn is our Elecrifying Electricity box champion.

I love being a scientist because...

I feel like I’m part of the wider effort to move towards living sustainably and fighting climate change.

The most awesome thing I have done so far is...

Building a fully functioning fluorescence microscope from scratch (think very expensive, and high-tech lego!)

My heroes are...

Caroline Lucas – a trailblazer in so many ways!

Advice I would give my 7 year old self...

Stick to subjects you enjoy and feel passionate about because those are the things you’ll want in a job later on

At primary school my favourite thing to do was...

Play football until I could barely walk
