I am an organic chemist. This means I mix chemicals together to make new ones.
My job is important because we need to find ways of making life saving medicines that all people can get when they need them. This means they have to be cheap enough and easy to make in the right amounts.
I mix chemicals that are easy to get and that don’t cost much money to make these really important medicines.
I came to Oxford to work on something called “asymmetric catalysis”. It sounds very fancy but it’s really just about figuring out the difference between left hand and right hand for molecules! It is one of the (many) great challenges faced by chemists and is especially important to biology and medicine. Using my training as a chemist, I hope that one day I will discover new ways to make lifesaving medicines more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way.

I love being a scientist because...
I wake up to new challenges everyday. Life never gets boring!
The most awesome thing I have done so far is...
Make (a naturally occuring) molecule in the lab just by mixing different chemicals together and waiting.
My heroes are...
My teachers in primary/secondary school. They are the ones who’ve nurtured my passion and made me the scientist today.
Advice I would give my 7 year old self...
Do what you enjoy and not what other people tell you to enjoy.
At primary school my favourite thing to do was...
Take apart old computers and put them back together again.
